Anant's POV

The drive home felt unnervingly quiet. Dhruv didn't say a word, his jaw set in that rigid line he gets when he's processing something heavy. When we finally pulled into our driveway, the house was glowing with lights. Manav and Swarna were standing in the foyer, their faces etched with a worry that quickly turned into a barrage of questions.

"Where have you two been? Do you have any idea what time it is?" Swarna asked, her voice hovering between relief and anger.

I stepped forward before Dhruv could, explaining the chaos of the night-the car breakdown, the rowdies, the hospital, and Krithika's hands. I left out the part about the slap and the panic attack; that felt too private to share, even with our parents.

"Those poor girls," Swarna whispered, her hand over her heart. "Thank God you both were there."

I nodded absently and headed straight for my room. I needed the silence. After a long, hot shower, I threw myself onto my bed, but sleep was miles away. My mind kept replaying that moment in the ward. Krithika-usually so composed, so obsessed with being 'Rank 1'-was a different person tonight.

She didn't care about her own pain. She stood up to her parents with a fire I'd never seen, all for Manvi. I've spent all the time competing with her, thinking she was just a brain with a scholarship. But seeing that bond... seeing how she shielded her sister while her own blood was literally on the floor... it did something to me.

She isn't just a topper. She's a wall. And tonight, I realized I'm not just looking at a rival anymore. I'm looking at someone I actually respect.

Dhruv's POV

I sat in the dark of my room, the silence feeling heavy. Every time I closed my eyes, I could still hear it-Manvi's broken, jagged gasps for air. The girl who usually fills a room with laughter and chaos was shattered tonight, and the sound of her sobbing into my shoulder was still echoing in my mind.

It felt wrong. Manvi is supposed to be the storm, the one who doesn't take anything seriously, the one who cracks jokes when things get tense. Seeing her believe she was a 'burden' or an 'unnecessary culprit' made my blood boil.

I'm trained to stay calm, to be the disciplined soldier, but tonight, my composure felt like a lie. I couldn't stand the thought of her crying like that again.

She's always living life at 100%, but tonight, she was at zero. And I realized then that I'd do anything to make sure she never feels that alone again.

Author's POV

Across town, the Sharma household was experiencing its own fragile healing. The tension had settled into a soft, aching sadness. Neeraj sat on the edge of the sofa, slowly pulling Manvi into a hug, his silence offering the grounding she needed.

Kumud approached them, her eyes red and swollen. She knelt beside them, offering a second, quieter apology. "I'm so sorry, Mumma's jaan. My brain just stopped working when I saw Kittu's dress filled with blood.."

Krithika sat nearby, her bandaged hands resting on her lap, silent tears tracking down her cheeks. It wasn't the pain of the stitches that made her cry; it was the emotional turmoil her sister had endured. No one in that house was used to seeing Manvi like this. The funny, lighthearted girl who always had a comeback was gone, replaced by a child who had been persecuted for a crime she didn't commit.

"Dinner is ready," Kumud whispered. "I made your favorites. Both of you."

Manvi shook her head, her voice small. "I'm not hungry, Mumma."

The room went still. Manvi refusing food was the ultimate sign of how deep the wound went. Kumud's heart broke again. She took Manvi's hand, pleading with her eyes until Manvi finally gave a small, tired nod.

They ate in a silence that wasn't awkward, but careful-like they were all afraid of breaking the peace they had just regained. They ate because life goes on, even when hearts are heavy.

This is the reality of relationships. We see chaos, we panic, and in our fear, we create more chaos. We hurt the ones we love the most when we are afraid for them. But then, in the quiet realization of the aftermath, we begin the slow, necessary work of healing our own wounds and each other's.

The night is over, but the morning will bring a different kind of school day.
