Chapter 4: First Day Chaos

College isn't just about endless lectures, heavy books, and constant focus. Sometimes, the best part of the journey is the unexpected classroom laughter and the shared, chaotic moments that turn a regular day into an unforgettable memory.

The loud chatter inside the CSE Section-1 fresher's classroom came to a grinding halt the exact moment a strict, sharply dressed professor walked through the door. He carried a thick engineering mathematics textbook under his arm, and his face wore the expression of a man who evaluated life strictly in variables.

Walking straight up to the podium, he set his books down with a heavy thud, adjusted his glasses, and looked at the sea of anxious faces.

"Good morning, class. I am Kamlesh Dutt Pandey,in short people call me KDP" he began, his voice echoing off the walls with an undeniable authority. "Welcome to Engineering Mathematics. Let me make one thing clear on day one: B.Tech is not just a degree; it is a mental marathon. Calculus will test your patience, and integration will question your life choices.

But remember, a difficult equation doesn't mean it has no solution. If you stay consistent, maintain discipline, and face every complex problem with grit, you will not just pass, you will conquer. Now, let's begin with the attendance."
He opened his register, his pen poised like a weapon.

Sitting in the third row, Isha suddenly felt a cold sweat break out. It wasn't because of the math speech; it was because of the girl sitting right next to her. Riya was already leaning forward, her eyes bright with a dangerous, over-enthusiastic energy. Riya had this severe, incurable chul (restless urge) of shouting Isha's attendance.

Main hamesha bolti hoon mujhe bolne de, lekin school se isko meri bhi attendance bolni hai! Isha screamed internally. Kabhi iski yeh bachpana hum dono ko le dubegi!
("I always tell her to let me speak, but since our school days, she has this obsession with shouting my attendance too! Someday her childish habits will get us both into massive trouble!")

"Roll number twelve!" KDP sir called out.
"Present, sir!" Riya shouted confidently.
"Roll number twenty-two!"
Before Isha could even draw a breath to open her mouth, Riya instantly pitched her voice slightly differently and piped up, "Present, sir!"

The classroom went dead silent. KDP sir froze. He slowly lowered his pen, his eyes narrowing behind his spectacles as he locked his gaze directly onto Riya.

"Roll number twenty-two... are you really Riya?" KDP sir asked, his voice dripping with dangerous suspicion. "Because this is the second consecutive time I am seeing you answer the attendance call."

Riya's confident smile faltered for a fraction of a second, but being Riya, she tried to bluff her way out. "Yes, sir! I am Riya."

"Is that so?" KDP sir leaned forward on the podium. "Show me your college ID card right now."

Isha knew they were completely doomed. Realizing that staying silent would make things a hundred times worse, she quickly stood up, her face turning bright red from embarrassment.

"I am Isha, sir!" she confessed quickly, raising her hand. "Earlier... she just got confused and accidentally called out my attendance as well because we're used to sitting together."

KDP sir sighed heavily, running a hand over his forehead as he stared at the two freshers. "Look, girls. This is not a school where I need to constantly spoon-feed you or discipline you like children. There is a strict decorum in this university, and we maintain it very seriously. So be careful."

He then turned his sharp gaze back to a visibly sweating Riya. "And you, girl... since it is the very first day, I am letting it go with a warning. Be careful next time. Sit down."

"Thank you, sir," Isha murmured, pulling a thoroughly chastised Riya down onto the bench.

As KDP sir turned back toward the green board to start writing a massive calculus formula, Isha and Riya finally sank into their seats. Right at that moment, a muffled snicker came from the bench immediately beside them.

Yash leaned across the small aisle, a massive, mocking grin plastered on his face. "Pakdi gayi na? B.Tech mein aagayi, phir bhi harkate bachkani hain!" he teased in a loud whisper, sticking his tongue out at Riya like an absolute child.
("Caught red-handed, right? You've made it all the way to B.Tech, but your antics are still so childish!")

Riya's eyes flashed with pure fury, and she turned around to glare at him as if she were planning his execution.
Seeing the brewing storm, both Isha and Shivansh moved instantly to control their respective best friends.

"Class mein hain, chup kar lo!" Isha hissed under her breath, pinching Riya's arm to make her turn around.
("We are in the middle of a class, shut up!")

Simultaneously, Shivansh nudged Yash sharply in the ribs. "Class mein hain, chup kar!" he muttered, giving his friend a stern look.
("We are in class, shut up!")

Just then, hearing a slight rustle of noise, KDP sir stopped writing and abruptly spun around toward the students. Sensing the danger, Riya and Yash stopped their silent warfare all of a sudden, instantly snapping their heads forward to stare at the blank board with intense, artificial concentration.

KDP sir scanned the room for a long three seconds before turning back to his Integration formulas.

An hour later, the bell finally rang, signaling the short break. As students began packed their bags to change classrooms, Yash strolled over to Riya's desk, leaning against the wooden edge with a smirk.

"Waise... kaisa laga class ke pehle din hi daant kha kar?" he asked playfully, raising an eyebrow.
("So... how did it feel to get a scolding on the very first day of college?")

Riya didn't even blink. She packed her notebook away, looked up at him, and matched his smirk with an incredibly sweet, dangerous smile.

"Koi nahi. Tum bhi khaoge... main hoon na! You will also experience it very soon. Thoda intezaar kar lo."

("No worries. You will get a scolding too... after all, I am right here! You will also experience it very soon. Just wait a little.")

Yash immediately put his hands to his cheeks, widening his eyes in mock terror. "Aleluluu... main toh dall(darr) gaya liya(Riya)!" he baby-talked dramatically.
("Oh, look at that... I am so scared, Riya!")

Riya didn't say a word. She slowly raised her hand, flashing him a sharp, sharp 'eye-for-an-eye' hand gesture, her fingers pointing from her eyes straight to his. Throwing a final, confident smirk over her shoulder, she turned and walked out of the classroom.

Back outside the room near the crowded corridor, the atmosphere was a bit more relaxed. Shivansh quietly walked up to Isha, who was waiting near the water cooler.

"Hey," Shivansh began, clearing his throat politely. "We didn't really get a proper introduction earlier because of the absolute chaos between our friends. I'm Shivansh."

Isha turned, offering a warm, genuine smile. "Yes, I have heard your name from the orientation list. I am Isha. Nice to meet you."

Looking to break the slight ice between them, Isha asked the very next question that popped into her mind. "Are you conventional or management quota?"
Shivansh instantly burst outsmiling, the sudden, genuine sound making a few passing students turn their heads. "Why do you feel I am from the management quota?"

Isha's cheeks flushed pink as she waved her hands frantically, completely flustered. "No, no! It's just... I just thought of asking something to continue the conversation, not to offend you at all! Just forget about it if you don't want to answer."

Shivansh smiled gently to calm her down. "Hey, it's fine, I'm not offended. I am from the conventional quota only. I managed to get a decent rank in the entrance. And you?"

"Yes, I am also conventional," Isha replied, breathing a small sigh of relief.
They shared a slightly awkward, sweet smile as a brief silence settled between them. Before the conversation could go any further, the long bell rang loudly across the corridor. The break was officially over.

"Time for the computer lab, right?" Shivansh asked.
"Yes, IT Workshop," Isha nodded.

Joining the rest of the moving crowd, they headed downstairs toward the central computing facility. As per the strict lab rules, all the freshers removed their footwear, leaving a massive, messy pile of shoes outside the glass doors before entering the heavily air-conditioned room to take their seats behind the flat-screen monitors.

A few minutes later, the professor walked in, exuding a very relaxed, friendly vibe. He stood at the front projector screen and clapped his hands.
"Well, hello everyone. Welcome to your first IT Workshop. I am CM," he introduced himself.

Before he could finish his sentence, Yash, who was sitting in the back row, instantly shouted out, "Chief Minister?!"
A wave of giggles rippled through the lab. The professor blinked, completely caught off guard, and then shook his head with a chuckle. "No, not at all! I am Chandra Murthy. Short cut: CM." He looked around the room, his eyes twinkling. "By the way... who shouted CM just now?"

Riya's internal radar jammed instantly. Seeing the perfect opportunity for an ultimate revenge strike, she raised her hand anxiously and pointed a finger. "Yash, sir!" she announced loudly, beaming a highly satisfied, befitting smile straight at Yash.

Everyone held their breath, fully expecting CM sir to unleash a historic first-day scolding. Instead, the professor just laughed it off. "Never mind! A few jokes are absolutely necessary in class to feel the vibe and keep ourselves stress-free. Engineering shouldn't be boring."

Yash quickly stood up, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. "Sorry, sir."
"Sit down, sit down," CM sir said warmly, waving his hand.

As Yash sat back down, he shot a deadly glare across the computers toward Riya, mouthing silently: "Mission unsuccessful, bechari (poor thing)!"
Sitting next to him, Shivansh facepalmed hard, staring at his computer screen. Kya hoga iska B.Tech mein aakar... school ke bache jaise harkate hain iske! he thought, completely exhausted by his friend's antics.
("What will happen to him in B.Tech... his behavior is exactly like a school kid!")

On the other side of the lab, Isha tapped Riya gently on her head, whispering, "Riya! Hum B.Tech mein hain, thodi toh mature ho jao!"
("Riya! We are in B.Tech now, please gain some maturity!")

"Peace, peaceful demonstration," CM sir cleared his throat, gathering everyone's attention back to the main projector. "Today, our first practical class is all about assembling and de-assembling a CPU."

He walked over to a heavy, metallic CPU tower kept on the central demonstration table. "The syllabus says the first thing is assembling. But... we will start with de-assembling because our CPU is already fully assembled! Logic, right? Once we take it apart, we will proceed to put it back together."

CM sir picked up a screwdriver, quickly undoing the side panel. "Now remember, students, you need to be extremely gentle while dealing with any internal parts of a computer. May it be the wiring, delicate chips, or the USB ports.

One wrong pull, and it's ruined."
To demonstrate, he reached into the open metallic box to pull out a thick, grey ribbon wire that seemed slightly stuck near the backboard. He gave it a gentle tug. It didn't budge.

He frowned, shifting his stance. He pulled again, harder this time. The wire remained firmly jammed. A few muffled snickers started echoing from the back benches-with subtle laughs and chaos.
Annoyed by the stubborn wire, CM sir took a deep breath, braced his foot against the table legs, gripped the wire with both hands, and pulled with a massive, explosive amount of pressure.
RIP!

The wire snapped out so violently that CM sir completely jolted backward, stumbling a few steps and nearly losing his balance as his glasses slid down his nose. The entire lab erupted into a loud, uncontrollable roar of laughter.

"Silent! Silent please!" CM sir straightened his glasses, looking thoroughly embarrassed but trying to maintain his dignity.

For the next twenty minutes, it was a complete struggle fest. CM sir sweated through his shirt as he tried to assemble the parts back together, shoving wires into random slots and forcefully hitting the side panels into place.

Finally, wiping his brow, he plugged the power cable in and hit the main power button.
Nothing happened. The monitor remained completely dead.

Right at that exact moment, the lab assistant walked through the back door, holding a clipboard. He looked at the dead computer, then at the sweating professor, and let out a loud groan.

"Wow, sir... it's the third CPU in a row that we have successfully sacrificed for the IT workshop! Let me go ahead and order some new pieces."

The entire room lost it. Students were practically falling off their rolling chairs, laughing like absolute pros at the unfolding disaster.

"Silent! Silent!" CM sir shouted, his face turning a comical shade of pink. "This... this was a calculated demo! Just to show you how, if you are not careful, CPUs can get permanently damaged! Got it?"

After hurriedly wrapping up a few minutes of dry theory to save whatever coverup he had left, CM sir looked at the clock. "Alright, that's enough for today. You are all dismissed to leave for your respective classrooms!"
