Chapter 5: Hidden Tears

Growing up doesn't mean the storms disappear; it just means you stop hiding from them. The real shift happens when you realize you are no longer the child who needs protection, but the shield ready to stand between the world and the people you love.

After a long, day of first-day college chaos, Isha and Riya finally managed to wrangle two empty seats on the local bus and sat down. As the vehicle rattled forward, Isha leaned back, her mind already shifting to the next task.

"Kal bhoolna mat, library jaana hai humein C language ka text book lene. Zyada der ki toh khatam ho jayenge," Isha said, her voice laced with urgent precision.

("Don't forget tomorrow, we have to go to the library to get the C language textbook. If we're too late, they'll all be checked out.")

Riya let out a heavy, dramatic groan, rolling her eyes toward the bus ceiling.

"Yaar, tumhare dimaag mein hamesha padhai hi kyun rehti hai? Class 9 se dekh rahi hoon, bohot hi padaku ho tum!"

("My god, why is studying always on your mind? I've been watching you since Class 9, you are such a massive nerd!")

Isha offered a soft, melancholic smile, looking out the dusty window as the city blurred past.

"Nahi yaar... jab mein thodi choti thi, mein mummy ko bohot satati thi. Padhai mein bhi achi nahi thi. Mein tuje sirf class 9 mein sections shuffle hone ke baad mili hoon. Usse pehle mein bohot hi difficult bachi thi, padhai bhi nahi karti thi."

("No, that's not it... when I was a bit younger, I used to trouble my mom a lot. I wasn't even good at studies. I only met you in Class 9 after the sections got shuffled. Before that, I was a very difficult child, and I didn't study at all.")

Riya turned her head, her lively eyes widening in genuine disbelief.

"Hayee Isha! Yakeen hi nahi ho raha! Phir kya hua? Kaisi aaya yeh change?"

("Oh my god, Isha! I can't even believe this! Then what happened? How did this change come about?")

Isha's expression softened further as a distant memory surfaced.

"Woh ek din mein ghar se bina bataye chali gayi...(One day I met a boy) and I met one boy of maybe our age. While I was weeping, he consoled me and then subtly explained things to me. Maybe God sent him just to get me on track.

"Usse pehle sirf meri maa hi thi jo mujhe samjhati thi, uss din uss ladke ne bhi bohot kuch sikha diya. And then I realized my mistake, aur tab se mein badli hoon."

(" Before that, it was only my mother who would teach me, but that day, that boy taught me so much too. And then I realized my mistake, and I've been changed ever since.")

Riya gasped, her romantic, drama-loving radar instantly lighting up.

"Phir mili kabhi uss ladke se?"

("Did you ever meet that boy again?")

"Nahi yaar, nahi mili uske baad toh," Isha replied, shaking her head wistfully.

("No, I never met him after that.")

"And aha... but sunne mein toh tum log drama ke leads lag rahe ho Bachpan ka pyar muje bhool nahi jana re!" Riya squealed, clutching her hands together.

("And oho... but from the sound of it, you guys totally seem like drama leads Childhood sweethearts don't ever forget!")

Isha burst out laughing, playfully nudging her best friend.

"Uff! Chali gayi phir se drama world mein. Tu aur teri drama obsession!"

("Uff! Back into your drama world again. You and your drama obsession!")

Meanwhile, back at Isha's home, the atmosphere was thick with tension and anxiety. Neha was sitting at the dining table, her posture completely crushed by stress.

Her hands were tightly bound together on the tabletop, and she had knelt her head down onto her gripped hands, trying to hold back the weight of her worries. Pradyuman and Shilpa were ruthlessly trying to snatch away her late husband's property, and the legal battle was draining her spirit.

Deepali walked over gently, placing a comforting glass of water on the table right next to Neha.

"It is your husband's property, why are you worrying? You will only get it," Deepali said softly, trying to inject some hope into the quiet room.

Neha slowly raised her head, her eyes rimmed with exhaustion and unshed tears.

"Lekin Pradyuman aur Shilpa ne toh fake documents banakar case kar liya na mujh par. Ab kya karu mein? Maine toh sab kuch chhod diya tha, pushtaini property mein se bhi mujhe kuch nahi mila. Lekin yeh toh mera baad Isha ka wahid security hai, unpar bhi unka nazar hai. Yeh kaunsa imtihan hai jo kabhi khatam hi nahi hoti?"

("But Pradyuman and Shilpa have filed a case against me using fake documents. What do I do now? I had already given up everything, I didn't even get anything from the ancestral property. But this property is Isha's only security after me, and their eyes are on that too. What kind of a test is this that never seems to end?")

Deepali pulled up a chair, her face full of empathy. "Tumhara saas-sasur kya bole?"
("What did your in-laws say?")

Neha let out a bitter, heartbroken sigh. "Woh tab bhi chup the jab humein jayidad se bedakal kar liya tha, aur ab bhi... jab ek beti se uski baap ki aakhiri wahid sarparasti bhi cheen ne mein."

("They were silent even back then when we were disowned and cut off from the estate, and they are silent even now... when the last remaining security of a father is being snatched away from a daughter.")

Neha rubbed her temples, her voice cracking. "Aur waise bhi, woh abhi budhe ho chuke hain, unki bas ki hai bhi nahi. Aur yeh duniya ka reet hai-akeli aurat ek beti ke saath hai na, toh unko lagta hai woh kuch bhi kar sakte hain."

("And anyway, they are old now, it's not even within their capacity to do anything. And this is the way of the world-since I'm a single woman with a daughter, they feel they can do whatever they want.")

Suddenly, a fierce spark ignited in Neha's tired eyes, and her posture straightened. "Lekin jab baat meri beti hi aati hai na, mein kuch nahi dekhti. I will fight and give it back."

("But when it comes to my daughter, I don't care about anything else. I will fight and give it back")

Deepali smiled warmly, placing a reassuring hand over Neha's. "Bilkul! Aur har ek ladayi mein main tere saath hoon, all in my sherni!"

("Absolutely! And in every single battle, I am right there with you, all in, my lioness!")

Right at that moment, the front door opened. Isha walked in, quietly setting her college bag down on the sofa. Her footsteps halted as she saw Deepali consoling her visibly distressed mother.
Sensing the heavy air, Isha walked over to the table and asked softly, "What happened?"

Before Neha could compose herself to hide the truth, Deepali spoke up in a rush of indignation. "Kya hona hai? Teri chacha-chachi ne fake property case kardi tumhari papa ki property cheen ne."

("What else would happen? Your uncle and aunt have filed a fake property case to snatch away your father's property.")

Isha froze, completely shocked. Neha instantly looked up at Deepali, her eyes filled with anxiety and silent reproach, wondering why on earth she had revealed the legal mess to her young daughter.

Realizing her slip, Deepali quickly put her hands over her ears, her expression apologetic. "Sorry, muh se nikal gaya."
("Sorry, it just slipped out of my mouth.")

Isha stepped closer, kneeling beside her mother's chair and gently taking Neha's trembling hands into her own. "Maa, kyun aap apki pareshani mujhse share nahi karti? I am 18 now, aur mein wo bachpan wali beti nahi hoon. Ab mein aapka kandha hoon, aur har cheez mein aapki dhaal ban kar khadi rahungi."

("Mom, why don't you share your troubles with me? I am 18 now, and I am no longer that helpless child from your past. I am your shoulder to lean on now, and I will stand as your shield through thick and thin.")

Isha looked into her mother's tearful eyes, her voice completely earnest. "Aur agar woh property hi aapki problem hai, toh I am ready to leave it. Aap bas stress mat lo."

("And if that property is the source of your problem, then I am completely ready to give it up. Please just don't take so much stress.")

Hearing this, Deepali immediately intervened, her tone firm yet loving as she corrected her.

"Nahi Isha, baat chhodne ki nahi hai. Baat hai apne liye khade hone ki. Yeh duniya bhari padi hai... agar abhi tumne palat waar nahi kiya aur sehti rahi toh phir yeh duniya itni zaalim hai ki kal ko tumhe aur sataye gi."

("No, Isha, it's not about giving it up. It's about standing up for yourself. This world is full of people like them... if you bow down to tolerate everything and don't raise your voice, this world is so cruel that it will torment you even more tomorrow.")

Neha wiped a tear from her cheek, looking proudly at her daughter before turning to her friend.

"Deepu is telling the truth only. And beta, life doesn't go as planned. Mein soch rahi thi Ranveer ke bina mein kabhi ji nahi paungi... dekho, now I am a successful Principal. Mein lecturer se principal ban gayi, aur apni beti ko bhi iss kabil bana rahi hoon ki wo kisi par dependent na ho jaye."

("Deepu is telling the truth only. And dear, life doesn't go as planned. I used to think I would never be able to live without Ranveer... but look at me now, I am a successful Principal. I rose from being a regular lecturer to a principal, and I am making my daughter capable enough so she never has to be dependent on anyone else.")

Neha squeezed Isha's hands tightly. "Aur rahi baat property ki... yeh case lambi chalegi, jagde honge, bura lagega, stress hoga. But phir bhi hum saath hain na, sab kuch seh lenge aur iss daldal se bahar bhi aayenge. Tum apni padhai par focus karo, theek hai? Fresh ho jao, mein khana lagati hoon."

("And as for the property... this case will drag on, there will be fights, and it will hurt and we will get stressed. But even then, we are together, right? We will endure anything and will come out of it. You just focus on your studies, okay? Go freshen up, I'll set the food on the table.")

Isha quietly walked into her bedroom and closed the door behind her. The moment she was alone in the quiet space, the iron wall of strength she had built in front of her mother completely crumbled. She fell onto her bed, burying her face deep into her pillow, and cried her heart out.

The muffled sobs shook her frame as the painful, locked-away memories of her childhood came rushing back.

She vividly remembered a day from her childhood, shortly after they had left their ancestral home. Her family had gathered for the Sriramanavami festival. Her chachi, Shilpa, had maliciously called her into a quiet corner.

"Don't you feel sad that you don't have a golden chain around your neck? Why don't you ask your mother? I have two sons, and I made golden chains for both of them," Shilpa had said, smoothing her fingers over her sons' jewelry, flexing it intentionally as if little Isha were completely deprived and lesser than them.

Isha remembered how her tiny hands had balled into fists back then. She had gathered every ounce of courage in her little body to look her aunt in the eye and answer back.

"I am my mom's jewelry and I don't need any gold. My mom is a kind woman who doesn't insult or hurt other people unlike you!"

The memory of the sharp, stinging slap that followed cut through Isha's mind like a knife. Her aunt had struck her hard across the face. Trembling but refusing to shed a tear in front of her tormentor, little Isha had walked out of the house.

She had never shared that incident with anyone-not even with her mother. Her mom was already drowning in her own immense chaos and grief, and Isha knew that revealing the slap would only trigger one more unnecessary, painful war for her mother to fight.

'But we left their place...' Isha thought bitterly, her tears soaking into the fabric of the pillow. 'We are entirely out of their way, living our own quiet lives, and still they choose to dwell on us and make my mother cry. Will this agony ever end, or will it continue to follow us always?'
