Chapter 27: The Whispers of the Heart

Veer POV

The flickering warmth of the oil lamps danced across the heavy parchment maps and royal documents scattered across my desk. The palace was quiet, wrapped in the deep stillness of night, but my mind remained tethered to the endless responsibilities of governing Vijaygarh.

Suddenly, the heavy scent of fresh jasmine filled the air, cutting through my thoughts.

Before I could turn, two soft, delicate hands slid around me from behind, pressing a gentle, hesitant hug against my back. The sheer familiarity of that touch sent an immediate wave of warmth through my veins. It was my Ranisa.

I placed my hands over hers, turning around slowly within her embrace to pull her in front of me. But the moment my eyes fell upon her face, my heart tightened. The usual vibrant, bindass spark in her eyes was missing. Instead, her features were clouded with a deep, tightly wound anxiety, and a palpable worry hung over her shoulders.

Before I could open my mouth to ask what was troubling her, she took a shaky breath, stepped closer until her chest brushed mine, and whispered, "Maharaj... I want to take our relation to the next level."

To seal her words, she leaned up, pressing her soft lips against my cheek.

My body responded instinctively to her proximity. I wrapped my arms around her waist, leaning down to return the gesture, pressing a tender kiss against her flushed cheek and tracing it down the soft line of her neck. But as I pulled back slightly to look into her face, my warrior instincts—honed to sense the slightest shift in the wind—stilled me.

I looked deep into her eyes. Though her spoken words claimed she was ready, her gaze betrayed her entirely. There was a faint, trembling hesitation hidden in the depths of her beautiful eyes, a silent reluctance that she was desperately trying to mask.

Without a second thought, I immediately pulled back, gently untangling my arms from her waist. I began to step away to give her space, but before I could take a full step, her hand shot out, her fingers gripping my wrist tightly to stop me.

"You cannot leave, Rajasa," she said, her voice laced with a desperate urgency. "We need to take our relation to the next level."

A soft, sorrowful smile touched my lips. I stepped back into her space. I reached up, my large hand gently cupping her warm cheek, my thumb brushing over her soft skin to soothe her racing heart.

"Not like this, Diya," I said softly, my voice holding all the gravity of the love I bore for her. "Not when you are not fully ready. Not when I can still see that ghost of hesitation in your eyes."

I leaned down slightly, holding her gaze so she could see the absolute sincerity in my soul. "Aur waise bhi, wo mard hi kya jisko apni patni ki jijag hi na samaj mein aaye?" (And anyway, what kind of a man is he who cannot even understand his wife's consent?)

I pressed a reassuring, gentle kiss onto the top of her head. "We will take things slowly, Diya. At our own pace. There is absolutely no rush, and no crown or kingdom can dictate what happens between us."

Diya POV

As Veer's words echoed in the quiet room, the heavy, suffocating knot in my chest instantly unraveled, leaving me entirely breathless.

He was right. I was hesitant.

Even though I love him with every fiber of my being, and even though my trust in him is absolute, the logical part of my 21st-century brain was still struggling to keep up. Our relationship had started under the heavy banner of a political alliance. I had traveled through centuries, fought off ancient customs, and stepped into the role of a Queen, and my soul still needed a little more time to process the sheer magnitude of everything that had changed around me.

When I had walked into his room tonight, it wasn't out of pure, unadulterated desire—it was out of immense pressure and guilt. Hearing Rajmata's words about the royal lineage had made me feel like I wasn't doing enough for the man who had literally rewritten the rules of his century for my happiness. I had tried to force myself to be the perfect queen for him.

But my man... he was too brilliant to be fooled. He had sensed my discomfort the exact second he has looked into my eyes. He didn't rush me, and he said to take things slowly. Instead, he stepped back and gave me the grace to breathe, reminding me that my comfort meant more to him than any royal duty.

I stood there, staring up at his handsome, fierce face, my heart swelling with a wave of admiration so profound it brought tears to my eyes.

I was utterly, completely impressed by the emotional depth and emotional intelligence of this 12th-century king. In an era where women were often treated as properties and expectations, Veer stood as a monumental anomaly. He understood the true essence of consent without me ever having to explain the modern definition to him. He didn't just protect me from enemy swords; he protected me from my own guilt.

A soft, tearful smile broke through my anxiety. I let go of his wrist and instead wrapped my arms tightly around his broad chest, burying my face against his heartbeat. I didn't say a word, because no language across any century had the words to describe how incredibly safe I felt in the arms of Maharaja Veerendra.
