Sometimes, the most profound conversations are the ones where not a single word is spoken.
The sky had completely opened up, unleashing a relentless, heavy downpour that turned the city streets into shimmering rivers of grey.
At the crowded bus stop, the wind was whipping the rain sideways, splashing cold droplets right under the small tin roof. Isha and Riya stood huddled together, shivering slightly as they desperately scanned the flooded road for any sign of public transport.
Their clothes were damp at the edges, and the chilly breeze wasn't helping.
"If we don't get a bus in the next ten minutes, we are going to grow roots right here," Riya muttered, shaking her wet umbrella.
Isha pulled her damp scarf a little tighter around her shoulders, her eyes fixed on the empty, waterlogged street.
Just as she was about to reply, a sleek car slowed down right in front of their water-drenched pavement. The tinted passenger window rolled down smoothly, revealing a familiar, incredibly striking face.
Shivansh looked across the seat, his dark eyes instantly locking onto Isha's shivering form.
"Isha? Riya? What are you guys doing here in this weather? Come inside, I'll drop you home."
Isha's heart gave a sudden, unexpected flutter against her ribs. She took a step back, her natural hesitance taking over.
"No, it's okay, Shivansh.
Thank you so much, but we've been waiting for a while... the bus should be here any minute."
Riya, who was completely done with the freezing wind, shot Isha an absolute look of disbelief. She grabbed Isha's arm firmly.
"Dekh behen, baarish hai toh bus aane se rahi! Kab tak intezaar karenge?
(Look sister, it's raining so the bus isn't going to show up! How long will we keep waiting?)"
Turning back to the car with a brilliant, grateful smile, she called out, "Thanks, Shivansh!"
Before Isha could utter another word of protest, Riya took her hand firmly, saying a quick, "Aaja! (Come on!)" and dragged her straight toward the car.
The heavy door closed with a solid, luxurious thud, instantly shutting out the roaring sound of the storm and replacing it with the warm, plush comfort of the air-conditioned cabin.
Shivansh had moved to the front passenger seat right beside the driver, leaving the back seat entirely for the two girls.
As the car smoothly pulled back into the rainy traffic, Isha let out a soft breath, trying to settle herself. Her hair was slightly damp from the spray of the rain, a few stray, dark tendrils clinging softly to her forehead and neck.
Unconsciously, she raised her hands, tilting her head slightly to the side as she gathered the soft curls and gently swept her hair backward, tucking it behind her ear.
Up front, Shivansh's gaze drifted naturally up to the rearview mirror hanging in the middle.
The moment his eyes found her reflection, everything else in the car seemed to fade into a blur. Through the glass, he watched the graceful, fluid movement of her hands, the soft curve of her neck, and the way the golden streetlights outside caught the damp sheen on her skin.
Just then, Isha lifted her gaze, her dark eyes locking directly into his through the mirror.
An invisible, electric current seemed to snap between them in that silent, enclosed space. Shivansh's eyes visibly brightened, a deep, intense warmth swirling in his gaze that he couldn't mask fast enough.
Neither of them broke the contact. For a long, breathless string of seconds, the only reality was the rhythmic, soft ticking of the windshield wipers and the suffocatingly sweet tension building between the front seat and the back.
Isha felt a sudden, beautiful swarm in her stomach, her fingers freezing against her hair as her cheeks flushed a deep, hidden crimson.
The mesmerizing silence lasted until the car pulled up near a familiar residential colony. Riya's stop had arrived first.
"Thanks a ton for the ride, Shivansh! Life-saver!" Riya grinned, quickly opening the door and sprinting under the porch of her apartment complex.
As the car moved forward again, a strange, heavy silence settled over the remaining two passengers. A few minutes into the drive, the elderly driver suddenly cleared his throat, looking around the dashboard console.
He swallowed hard, his throat dry.
"Shivansh babu, paani hai kya? (Shivansh babu, is there water?)"
Shivansh checked the side panels and the central console, shaking his head.
"No, Kaka, there isn't any water here."
He turned around slightly in his seat, his eyes avoiding a direct lock with Isha's to keep his racing heart steady.
"Isha, do you happen to have a water bottle?"
"No, mine got empty during the last lecture," Isha replied softly.
Just as she spoke, the driver suddenly let out a loud hiccup. Driver kaka was caught in a non-stop, continuous chain of loud, painful hiccups that made his chest heave.
By the time the car finally pulled up right outside Isha's house, the driver was visibly struggling to catch his breath between the hiccups.
Looking at his distressed state, a deep wave of concern washed over Isha. She couldn't just let an elderly man drive away like that.
"Please come inside for a moment uncle," Isha said urgently, leaning forward.
"Have some water, sit down for five minutes until the hiccups stop, and then you can leave."
Shivansh looked at her anxious face and nodded gently. All three of them stepped out under the heavy rain, rushing up the steps to the porch.
Isha pressed the doorbell, her heart beating a little fast.
The door swung open almost instantly, revealing Neha standing there with a highly stressed, angry expression on her face. Before she even looked up, she started scolding,
"Phone kyun nahi utha rahi thi? Ek toh baarish aur upar se tumhari laparwahi! Kitna pareshan ho gayi thi mein!
(Why weren't you picking up the phone? On one hand it's raining, and on top of that your carelessness! I got so incredibly worried!)"
As she finished her sentence, her eyes finally traveled past Isha's shoulder, freezing completely as she spotted two tall male figures standing right behind her daughter.
Neha stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes widening as she subtly signaled to Isha with a sharp nudge, silently asking, Who are they?
Isha cleared her throat quickly, her cheeks warming up.
"Mamma, this is my friend from college, Shivansh... and this is his driver kaka. They saw me and Riya stuck at the bus stop and gave us a ride."
The anger vanished from Neha's face instantly, replaced by warm, traditional hospitality.
"Oh, please come inside! Come in!" She immediately ushered them into the cozy, neatly kept living room.
Deepali was already sitting on the sofa, a notebook in her hand, looking up with immense curiosity.
Neha quickly introduced Shivansh to her, while the driver hiccups echoing loudly through the quiet house, completely unstopped.
Deepali, being her usual lively, unfiltered self, looked at the driver and let out a light chuckle.
"Koi toh yaad kar raha hai aapko, warna itna hiccups nahi aate!
(Someone is definitely missing you dearly, otherwise one doesn't get this many hiccups!)"
The driver, despite his distress, smiled warmly, his eyes crinkling at the corners.
"Aur kaun, ji... meri dharampatni hi kar rahi hogi! (Who else... it must be my devoted wife doing it!)"
Deepali burst into a fit of laughter at his sweet response. But right at that moment, as if on cue, a sudden, loud hiccup escaped Isha's lips.
The room went quiet for a split second. Deepali's eyes snapped toward isha, a highly mischievous, knowing smirk spreading across her face.
" tuje kaun yaad kar raha hai, Ishu? ( who is missing you so much, Ishu?)"
Isha's breath hitched entirely in her throat. Her eyes instinctively darted across the small room, landing directly on Shivansh.
Shivansh was already standing right next to the side table, where Neha had just placed a large glass jar of water.
Without a single word, his movements smooth and incredibly grounded, he lifted the jar, poured a fresh glass of water, and stepped right into her space.
He held the glass out to her, his long fingers brushing against the cold glass, his eyes dark, intense, and locking onto hers with an unspoken, profound intensity.
The entire living room seemed to shrink. As their eyes met over the glass of water, the silence between them became heavy, burning with a quiet, undeniable chemistry that made Isha's heart thud wildly against her ribs.
Meanwhile Neha turned her head and shot a highly sharp, warning look at Deepali, signaling her to shut her mouth instantly.
Deepali caught her mother's stern look, raised her hands in mock surrender, and muttered under her breath,
"Mein kuch nahi bol rahi ab... meri Principal Mam mujhe debar kar degi warna.
(I am not saying another word now... otherwise my Principal Mam will literally debar me.)"
Isha quickly took the glass, gulping down the water to hide her burning face, while Shivansh stepped back, a soft, quiet smile playing at the edge of his lips.
A few minutes later, with the driver's hiccups finally completely cured, Shivansh and the elderly man politely said their goodbyes, leaving the cozy house behind as they started for their home.
The next day at the college campus, the atmospheric energy was completely different. The storm had passed, leaving behind a beautifully soothing, deeply overcast weather.
The sky was filled with heavy, dark clouds that blocked out every single ray of sunlight, plunging the entire second-year classroom into a dim, twilight-like setting.
The only illumination in the room came from the long, harsh white tube lights buzzing overhead, creating a highly cinematic, moody vibe that perfectly captured the essence of a nostalgic student life.
Late in the afternoon, around four o'clock, the class was completely quiet as PD mam stood at the podium, scribbling a boring diagram on the blackboard.
Suddenly, without any warning, a loud click echoed through the corridor, and the entire room fell into pitch-black, absolute darkness.
The power went off.
Instantly, the entire classroom erupted into a loud, wild, and chaotic roar. Every single backbencher hooted, whistled, and shouted at the top of their lungs-a universal, classic college tradition that every engineering student lived for.
"Shut up, students! Quiet down right now!" PD mam shouted over the din, slamming her duster against the table.
But before she could even restore order, the power snapped back on just as abruptly.
The white lights flashed over their faces, and the entire class let out an even louder, highly dramatic groan and collective shout of disappointment.
Listening to the pure, infectious energy of the shouting, Riya's fun-loving, outspoken nature completely took over.
Getting highly excited, she threw her head back and let out a loud, ringing shout of her own, laughing brightly as she high-fived a student nearby. Beside her, Isha and Purvi sat completely still, their notebooks open, looking like the perfectly obedient, sweet kids they were, though their faces were filled with wide, amused smiles as they watched Riya's chaotic energy.
It was a golden, fleeting moment of pure campus nostalgia-the kind of simple memory that sticks with you long after the college gates close forever.
Later that evening, as the campus began to empty out under the dim, dusky sky, Riya was walking down the paved path near the sports ground. As she passed by the open basketball court, the steady, rhythmic thud... thud... thud of a ball echoing against the concrete caught her attention.
She stopped, leaning against the chain-link fence. There, under the dull amber court lights, Yash was playing completely alone.
He was moving with a fluid, fierce intensity, dribbling the ball between his legs and executing sharp layups against the net, his forehead glistening with a fine sheen of sweat.
Riya unlatched the fence gate, stepping onto the court with a playful smirk.
"Why are you playing all alone?"
Yash caught the ball against his chest, his movements freezing as he turned around. Seeing her standing there, his usual guarded, arrogant mask slid right back into place.
"Tujhe kya? (What's it to you?)" he muttered, spinning the ball carelessly on his index finger.
Riya walked closer, her hands tucked safely into her pockets, her eyes flashing with a highly competitive spark.
"Nothing... I was just thinking that playing alone holds one major advantage for you. At least you won't lose, right? Just like the epic way you lost on the badminton court the other day! Carry on, carry on... keep practicing!"
Yash's eyes narrowed instantly, a dangerous, highly playful smirk cutting across his face. He walked right up to her, stopping just inches away, his tall frame completely towering over her as the ball rested against his hip.
"Uss time par situation alag thi, CR sahiba. (The situation was entirely different at that time, Miss CR.)
If you have the real courage, then let's have a match right now. A one-on-one basketball showdown."
Riya didn't back down an inch. She tilted her chin up, looking straight into his eyes. "Phir se haar jaoge. (You will lose all over again.)"
Yash stepped even closer, his gaze dropping to her lips for a split second before locking back onto her eyes with a heavy, intense gravity.
"Wo toh waqt batayega, CR ji. (That, time will tell, Miss CR.)"
A thick, suffocating wave of pure tashan and raw, unyielding tension locked between them. The eye contact was unbroken, their breathing matching the quiet hum of the evening air.
"Fine. Show me what you've got," Riya challenged, her voice dropping into a breathless whisper.
Yash suddenly tossed the ball straight at her . Riya caught it with sharp reflexes, immediately bouncing it against the concrete as the match began.
The court turned into a battlefield of sharp, high-intensity movements. Riya, driven by her practical, solution-oriented mindset, used her low center of gravity to execute quick crossovers, her sneakers squeaking loudly against the court as she drove past him. But Yash was a wall.
He shadowed her every move, utilizing a tight, suffocating defensive stance.
As Riya drove toward the paint, attempting a sharp pump-fake, Yash didn't bite.
He stayed grounded, and the moment she went up for a jump shot, his tall frame leaped with her. His shadow completely enveloped her as his long arm reached up, cleanly blocking the shot with a powerful rejection.
The ball bounced away, but their momentum carried them straight into each other.
Riya gasped as her back hit the padded pole of the basketball hoop, and before she could move, Yash's arm came down, his palm slamming against the pole right beside her ear, effectively pinning her in place.
He was breathing heavily, the heat radiating off his chest enveloping her entirely. He was so close that she could see the golden flecks in his dark eyes, his chest rising and falling just a millimeter away from hers.
Riya's heart hammered against her ribs-not from the exhaustion of the game, but from the raw, overwhelming rush of emotions flooding her system.
She looked up at him, his damp hair falling over his forehead, and for the first time in her life, her practical, problem-solving mind completely short-circuited. She felt a deep, terrifying pull toward him, her breath hitching as she stared at his face.
However, Yash's eyes remained completely locked in the competitive thrill of the moment. He was fully immersed in the play, a triumphant smirk resting on his lips as he looked down at her flustered face.He was just enjoying the victory, while Riya stood there, utterly trapped in the fiery depth of an unspoken feeling she couldn't understand.
Instead of backing away, Yash leaned in just a fraction closer, his palm still firmly planted on the padded pole right beside her ear. He looked directly into her wide, breathless eyes and let out a low, highly mocking chuckle right against the quiet space between them.
"Kya hua, CR sahibaa? Bolti bandh ho gayi?" Yash teased, his voice dripping with playful arrogance.
"CR haar gayi! CR haar gayi! Jo kal bade flaunt kar rahi thi... aaj ek hi block mein dher ho gayi?"
("What happened, Miss CR? Lost your tongue? The CR lost! The CR lost! The one who was walking around flaunting the other day ... got completely knocked out by a single block today?")
The sheer proximity of his face and the warmth of his breath sent a dangerous shiver down Riya's spine. Her heart was hammering so violently against her ribs she was terrified he would hear it.
Desperate to mask her absolute panic and the sudden rush of vulnerability, she forced her practical, defensive walls right back up.
She placed both her palms flat against his chest, feeling the solid, rapid heat of his heartbeat through his jersey, and gave him a firm, irritated shove backward.
"Shut up, Yash!" Riya snapped, her voice coming out a little more breathy than she intended. She quickly adjusted her clothes, trying to look composed.
"It wasn't a fair match at all. You clearly used your height advantage to trap me. It's practically cheating!"
Yash stumbled back a couple of steps, laughing effortlessly as he spun the basketball on his fingertips.
"Acha? Ab haar gaye toh excuses? Heightka issue nahi hai, Madam. Problem height mein nahi, tumhare reflexes mein hai!"
("Oh really? Now that you lost, you're making excuses? My heightis not issue, Madam. The problem isn't my height, it's your reflexes! ")
"My reflexes are perfectly fine!" Riya shot back, crossing her arms tightly over her chest to stop her hands from trembling.
"Next time, I'll choose the game. Let's see how much you brag when I completely destroy you in a strategic board game."
"Oh, I am trembling with fear, Maharani," Yash chuckled, throwing the ball into his sports bag and swinging it over his shoulder with an effortless wink.
"But until that day comes... don't forget the official score. Yash: One, CR: Zero."
Riya rolled her eyes dramatically and said, yaadash chali gayi kya gajini Yash: One, CR: One. Bhool gaye badminton ka din jab mein jeethi thi.(oh memory loss patient, did u forgot the game where i won the bandminton)
