Life often plays a paradoxical game-it hands you the courage to build your dreams in one corner, while silently testing your anchors in another.
The second-year summer holidays arrived, bringing a much-needed break from the grueling routine of engineering. While the rest of the campus emptied out, Akshat and Purvi's world was just beginning to tune its strings.
Sitting together on a quiet afternoon, Akshat nervously drummed his fingers against the wooden frame of his acoustic guitar. He looked up at Purvi, his eyes shining with a dream he had suppressed for far too long. "Purvi... I've been thinking. I really want to start a musical band. A space where I can compose my own songs, write lyrics, and sing from the heart."
He paused, the heavy weight of practicality pulling at his enthusiasm.
"Par isme toh bahut dikkat hai na... like, it's not that easy to establish a band from scratch."
("But there are so many difficulties in this... like, it's not that easy to establish a band from scratch.")
Purvi smiled, shifting closer to him. Her eyes held that fierce, unshakeable belief that had become Akshat's ultimate sanctuary.
"Tum itna lamba kyun soch rahe ho? Aaj kal hum social media ke era mein hain, Akshat. Huge level par start karne ki kya zaroorat hai? Tum abhi sirf baby steps lo."
("Why are you thinking so far ahead? Nowadays we are in the era of social media, Akshat. What is the need to start on a huge level? Just take baby steps for now.")
She leaned back, mapping out the vision with practical clarity.
"Apna content banao, use YouTube aur Instagram par post karo, aur dekhte hain baat kahan tak jaati hai. Anyhow, tum abhi apne third year mein ja rahe ho, right? Simultaneously, tum ise ek hobby ki tarah pursue karo. Future mein agar laga ki music mein career banana hai, toh aage badhna. Agar nahi, toh hum padh toh rahe hi hain... hamare paas do saal baaki hain engineering ke. We can figure it out."
("Create your content, post it on YouTube and Instagram, and let's see where it goes. Anyhow, you are entering your third year now, right? Simultaneously, pursue it as a hobby. In the future, if you feel like making a career out of it, then move forward. If not, we are studying anyhow... we have two years left of engineering. We can figure it out.")
Her genuine push dissolved his lingering doubts. Throughout the summer, Purvi actively helped him scout local talent, meeting new people to collaborate with and slowly putting together a small, dedicated musical band. Whenever an ounce of insecurity crept into Akshat's mind, Purvi was right there to anchor him.
"Nahi Akshat, aisa sochne ki bilkul zaroorat nahi hai. Sab theek ho jayega, hum kuch na kuch figure out kar lenge."
("No Akshat, there is absolutely no need to think like that. Everything will be fine, we will figure something out.")*
With her constant backing, they launched Akshat's official Instagram page and YouTube channel. The summer passed in a beautiful haze of recordings, editing, and late-night jam sessions, with Akshat and Purvi completely lost in a world they were building together.
While Purvi and Akshat's life was blooming with music, a sudden wave of worry knocked on Isha's door.
Deepali Aunty's son Vinay unexpectedly arrived from America. He didn't waste a single moment and came directly to meet Neha. Seeing him look so incredibly strained, Isha stepped into the living room with a warm but concerned expression.
"Hi bhaiya, kaise ho aap?"
("Hi bhaiya, how are you?")
He looked at Neha and Isha, his voice heavy with exhaustion and fear.
"Mom is not ready to get her treatment, and I am really worried. She has an immunodeficiency condition, and the best treatment for it is available only in America. I do a job there, but she keeps insisting that she is not ready to leave this country. She is not ready to move away from here. Can you please talk to her?"
Neha's breath hitched in absolute shock. A sharp sting of hurt flashed through her, Deepali was her closest friend, almost family, yet she had never shared this immense sorrow. But looking at the young man's anxious face, Neha knew her personal feelings had to take a backseat. This was a matter of life and death.
The moment Deepali returned from her workplace, Neha didn't let her step past the threshold before bombarding her with fierce, protective anger.
"Tumne mujhe kyun nahi bataya, Deepali? Itni badi baat tumne mujhse chupayi?!" Neha yelled, her voice trembling with emotion.
"Ab mujhe sab pata chal chuka hai, aur tumhein jaana hi hoga!"
("Why didn't you tell me, Deepali? You hid such a massive thing from me?! Now I know everything, and you absolutely have to go!")
Isha stepped forward, adding her voice to the pressure, refusing to let Deepali make any excuses.
"Haan Aunty, aapko jaana hi padega. Health se badhkar kuch nahi hai."
("Yes Aunty, you have to go. Nothing is more important than health.")
Overwhelmed by their relentless love and fierce stubbornness, Deepali finally wiped a tear from her eye and relented.
"Haan theek bhyii ... main manungi. Main jaungi."
("Yes, okay... I agree. I will go.")
The next few days were a blur of packing bags and organizing documents. The entire family went to the airport to see them off. As Deepali and her son walked through the security gates, heading toward the medical care she desperately endured, Neha and Isha stood hand-in-hand.
A deep, painful sting settled in their hearts. Deepali had become an irreplaceable pillar of their daily lives, standing by them through every high and low. Knowing she would be thousands of miles away for an indefinite time felt like losing a piece of home. But looking at her mother, Isha forced a brave smile. This was life, and this was how its unpredictable chapters unfolded.
The final days of summer vacation began to fade away, and the quiet rhythm of their household slowly returned. But peace, it seemed, was an illusion.
On a heavy, suffocating afternoon, the silence of their home was brutally shattered. The harsh, demanding blare of a police siren echoed outside, stopping dead in front of their gate. Before Isha or Neha could even comprehend what was happening, heavy boots marched inside, and police officers filled their living room.
An officer stepped forward, his expression cold as he pulled out an official warrant. "Neha Sharma? You are under arrest under the suspicion of promoting banned substances within the college campus. You need to come with us to the police station right now."
The words hit the room like a bomb blast.
"Kya?! Yeh kya bakwaas hai?! Meri mummy aisa kuch nahi kar sakti!" Isha screamed, her voice cracking as absolute horror paralyzed her mind.
("What?! What nonsense is this?! My mother can never do something like this!")
Neha stood completely frozen, her face draining of all color as the handcuffs were harshly locked around her wrists. She didn't even get a chance to explain or console her daughter before she was firmly dragged out of the house.
"Mumma! Mumma, suniye! Aap unhe aise nahi le ja sakte!" Isha sobbed hysterically, her vision blurring with hot, frantic tears.
("Mumma! Mumma, listen! You cannot take her away like this!")
The heavy iron doors of the police van slammed shut with a deafening thud. As the engine roared to life and the van sped down the street, Isha lost all control. Driven by pure, primal panic, she sprinted out of the gate, chasing down the asphalt, crying out at the top of her lungs as the vehicle carried her entire world away into the dark.
